The Bald Eagle symbolizes leadership—it represents quality and excellence. The Bald Eagle, in all its glory, a high flyer that soars above all other birds, is also symbolic of freedom and liberty. Its piercing vision unsurpassed, Native Americans believed the Eagle to be a symbol of power and healing.
Analogously, the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps have placed the Eagle on
their seal—the Eagle’s is associated with the courage and
bravery exhibited by our soldiers. Terms such as “Lone
Eagle,” “Eagle Eye,” and “Eagle Scout”
have been entered into our cultural vocabulary. Golf, a sport
known worldwide, also utilizes the term—better than a birdie, it
represents two strokes below par.
At the completion of your dissertation defense, your dissertation Chairperson will present you with a Golden Eagle pin. This pin is the ALS program’s seal of approval, symbolizing the achievement of your doctoral status which is the highest degree that a University can award
