Experience and Interests

Dr. Dandeneau has been with the Counseling department since 1995. She currently serves as the department chairperson and has taught Introduction to Community Counseling; Management of Guidance Services; Practicum for Adolescents and Adults; and Individual Analysis. As Chairperson, Claire coordinates admission to the counseling program and represents the department in the College of Education and the Graduate School.

Since 1996, Dr. Dandeneau became the advisor for the Counselor Education Student group. The group has an active membership and recently Dr. Dandeneau helped them establish an IUP chapter of the International Counseling Honorary - Chi
Sigma Iota.

Claire has considerable experience and interest in juvenile corrections. Recently, she was appointed to be a member of the University - State Correctional Institution (SCI) Task Force. The Task Force is intended to be a cooperative project between
IUP, the community and the State Department of Corrections. It’s mission is to explore and develop ways to work in collaboration with SCI-Pine Grove, the youthful offender prison being built in Indiana County. The Task Force will soon be presenting its recommendations to the Commissioner and Claire hopes to maintain her involvement as the project continues.

Dr. Dandeneau co-presented with Dr. Worzbyt at last year’s ACA conference in Pittsburgh. They conducted a Roundtable seminar entitled School Counseling: Purpose, Practice, and Service. She also collaborated with Dr. Fontaine on a book review for the Sex Roles: A Journal of Research; they reviewed a book entitled Violence in Gay and Lesbian Domestic Partnerships edited by Claire Renzetti and Charles Miley. Currently , she is co-authoring a chapter in an edited book, Helping Adolescents at Risk Through Literature with Dr. Sue Johnson of the English Department and has joined on as a co-author for the second edition of Elementary School Counseling: A Blueprint for Today and Tomorrow by Drs. Worzbyt and O’Rourke. In November, she will be co-presenting at the International Experiential Education Association on the topic of credentialing in the area of wilderness/adventure therapy.

Claire has considerable interest in professional licensure for counselors in PA; she is on the PCA’s licensure committee.
