Experience and Interests

Dr. Janet H. Fontaine, Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling, has 
been at  IUP since 1989.  Prior to becoming a faculty member, she served as Director of the Moorhead State University (MN) Counseling Center.  Dr. Fontaine has also worked as a counseling center psychologist at Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC).  At UNC she was appointed Director of the Career Development and Testing Center.  Having received her doctorate from the University of Hawaii, teaching on U.S. Military bases in West Berlin and England, she developed an interest in multicultural counseling and diversity issues.

Dr. Fontaine’s scholarship is in the area of sexual minority youth and fostering safe school environments.  She has contributed several refereed journal articles and book chapters on the topic of gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth, including an article in the Professional School Counselor’s special issue on sexual minority youth.  Dr. Fontaine has made numerous professional national and regional conference presentations on  counseling approaches with homosexual adolescents.  Her most recent contribution is a chapter on transgender issues in counseling for an upcoming book on sexuality issues for counselors.

Dr. Fontaine is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Nationally Certified Career Counselor (NCCC).  In this latter capacity, she serves as a career counseling consultant to USA Today’s on-line Career Center (see link on the side).  Nationally, she is on the Editorial Board of the Professional School Counselor Journal and serves as the American School Counseling Association’s liaison to the APA Healthy Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Adolescent Project funded by the Center for Disease Control.  Within the Department, she coordinates the New Student and Graduate Assistant Orientations each semester, directs the Graduate Assistant selection process, the Outstanding Student Award process, and works in conjunction with Dr. Guth to coordinate the Department’s Advisory Board.  Each semester she creates the Department’s news bulletin for students, CounselorLink.  She also is responsible for Field Placement coordination.  Her instructional areas are career development, psychological and educational assessment, diversity issues, advanced counseling practica and field placement.
