Background and Experience Background and Experience Dr. Lorraine Guth joined the faculty in fall 1998 and is currently an Associate Professor. Dr. Guth completed her Ph.D. at Indiana University in counseling psychology in 1994. She also has a Masters Degree in counseling from the University of Memphis. She has been a counseling faculty member at Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of South Florida at Fort Myers. Dr. Guth has a wide range of counseling experiences, and she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Tennessee Center for Developmental Disabilities. She provided assessment and consultation services to public schools, engaged in play therapy with children, and provided group therapy to older adults residing in care homes. She is also a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania. Dr. Guth has been teaching a variety of counseling courses including Diversity Issues in Counseling, Human Sexuality Issues for Counselors, Advanced Practicum, Basic Counseling Skills, Community Counseling, and Group Counseling Practicum. Dr. Guth says, “I help to foster the awareness, knowledge, and skills of my students by encouraging them to take an active role in their learning process. I primarily utilize experiential methods (i.e. cooperative learning groups, role plays, guest speakers, case studies) in order to foster student growth and development. As students engage in the experiences related to the learning objectives, they apply and synthesize this learning in a meaningful way.” Dr. Guth is a member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Multicultural Counseling & Development, and the American Psychological Association Scholarly Activities Dr. Guth is an active scholar and her research focuses on sexuality and diversity issues. Drs. Guth and Witchel were awarded two grants from the University Senate Research Committee to study the self-concept, gender identity, body image, and sexuality in individuals with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and Turner's Syndrome. They are currently analyzing the data for these projects that involved administering questionnaires and interviews. Additionally, she earned an internal IUP grant to develop/submit a diversity training grant for external funding. Dr. Guth also received several mini-technology grants from the College of Education and Educational Technology. She was awarded a grant from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Ford Foundation. She explored the effects of In-Person versus Internet training on students’ attitudes toward homosexuality. She has also explored issues related to HIV/AIDS education, multicultural and diversity education, People First language, and communication with children. Dr. Guth has made presentations at national and regional conferences, and has numerous publications in journals such as the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Journal of Homosexuality, and Journal of College Student Development. At the university level, she is departmental representative for the University Senate and is the chair of the University Senate Research Committee. Dr. Guth is also an IUP Safe Zone member. Safe Zone members offer information, sensitivity, and understanding towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues on campus. On the national level, Dr. Guth has been involved with the Association for Specialists in Group Work. She is the Awards Committee Co-Chair and the Board Approved Speakers Committee Co-Chair. She has also been involved with Division 49 (Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy) of the American Psychological Association.
