Current News

In addition to recently welcoming a new daughter into the world, Dr. McCarthy has been active in teaching and writing. For Dr. McCarthy, the summer was filled with three classes, including a new course on "Diagnostic and Treatment Issues". Several alumni were in the course. Dr. McCarthy stated that the course was enjoyable to teach, and the Saturday format was one that received positive feedback from most participants.

Dr. McCarthy notes that his writing has also been a source of much pleasure. He recently had had an article on individualism and collectivism accepted by the Journal of Multicultural Counseling & Development. Dr. McCarthy also served as the primary author on a book chapter on motivational interviewing. The book is entitled "Counseling employees: A multifaceted approach" and was published this Fall by the American Counseling Association. Finally, Dr. McCarthy also has a paper in press that has been accepted by the Journal of Counseling & Development. It is on traditional masculinity and counseling and is co-authored by Ebony Holliday, a recent graduate who is Dr. McCarthy's former graduate assistant.  Ebony is now working on her doctoral degree at Lehigh University. Dr. McCarthy is also currently collaborating on an article with two students in the Monroeville program, Barb Weiner and Mary Ellen Jarrett.

Dr. McCarthy has offered two recent presentations. The first was to the executive board of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association and involved the workshops and seminars that our Department has been developing to students, alumni, and area counseling professionals. The second was offered to faculty, student affairs professionals, and students at Robert Morris University and concerned the mental health needs of college students. I have also had a 90-minute presentation accepted at the ACA conference in March, 2003, and this will be on helping clients to think differently.

Experience and Interests

As a way of introduction, Dr. McCarthy comes to IUP via the Counseling and Educational Psychology Department at Slippery Rock University.  Prior to that, he was a visiting professor and Field Placement Coordinator in the Counseling Psychology Department at Chatham College.  In addition, he also taught for three years in the Counselor Education Department at St. Bonaventure University.  In that position, he was heavily involved in the Department's weekend program in suburban Buffalo.  This program is quite similar to the cohort model in the Department that is in the Monroeville Center.  Dr. McCarthy received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (APA-accredited), and his pre-doctoral internship was at the University of Florida Counseling Center (APA-accredited).  Dr. McCarthy is licensed as a psychologist in both Pennsylvania and New York State.

Dr. McCarthy's interests include multicultural counseling; short-term counseling; cognitive therapy; masculinity and counseling; and the change process in counseling.  He is certified in cognitive therapy through the Cleveland Center for Cognitive Therapy.  Dr. McCarthy presented on Motivational Interviewing at the 2001 Conference of the American Counseling Association (ACA).  He also concluded the intermediate track of the 17th Annual Hypnosis Workshop at West Virginia University last November and participated in a week-long training on health psychology sponsored by the Pittsburgh Mind-BodyCenter this summer.  Furthermore, he has articles about counseling in the last three issues of the Journal of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association.
