Experience and Interests The Counseling Department was excited to add Dr. Joe Utay to a half-time permanent tenure track position this Fall. Dr. Utay has worked part time in the counseling department as a temporary faculty member for the past 2 years. Dr. Utay completed his undergraduate work with a B.S. in both Education and Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. He then earned his Master's and Doctorate level degrees in Counseling from Eastern Texas State University (currently known as Texas A & M). Dr. Utay has an impressive resume. His past work experience includes: classroom teaching, school counseling, school psychology, psychiatric case work supervision, private practice, and University teaching. Before coming to IUP, Dr. Utay was a tenured professor in the Department of Counseling at Eastern Kentucky University. While in Kentucky, he was Editor of the Kentucky Counseling Association’s state professional journal and was re-elected twice as President of the Kentucky Mental Health Counselors Association. Dr. Utay relocated to Wexford, PA where he and his wife, Dr. Carol Utay, founded Total Learning Centers. In addition to teaching part time at IUP, Dr. Utay works as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as well as administers psycho educational evaluations for Total Learning Centers. Currently, Dr. Utay is teaching Introduction to Community Counseling and Individual Practicum at the Monroeville campus. Previously, Dr. Utay has taught Group Procedures, Assessment, and Basic Counseling Skills for IUP. In addition to working at Total Learning Centers and teaching at IUP, Dr. Utay does a lot of community service writing. He co-authors regular monthly columns for Northern Connections and North Hills Monthly Magazine with his wife and colleague, Dr. Carol Utay. Dr. Utay also writes several articles a year for Pittsburgh Parent and Pittsburgh Magazine. Dr. Utay resides in Wexford, PA with his wife, Carol and daughter, Andrea. In closing, Dr. Utay extends an open invitation for anyone interested in visiting Total Learning Centers.
