Experience and Interests

Dr. John C. Worzbyt has been with the Counseling Department since 1972. He is a former chairperson of the Department,past coordinator of the school and community counseling programs, and chaired the department’s doctoral program from 1986 until its phaseout in 1995. 

Dr. Worzbyt has over 30 years of teaching experience in education having worked as an elementary and middle school science teacher, school counselor, and counselor educator. He is a nationally board certified counselor and holds membership in the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselor Association, and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. 

In addition to fulfilling teaching and administrative responsibilities as coordinator for school counseling certification, Dr. Worzbyt is a consultant to school districts, social service agencies, mental health clinics, hospitals, banks, and professional associations. His areas of expertise are counseling theory, child counseling, decision making and risk management, self-esteem development, and human potential enhancement. 

As an author, Dr. Worzbyt has co-authored four textbooks, two monographs, educational teaching curriculum, and articles in professional journals pertaining to counseling, decision making, management, and leadership. His most recent textbook, co-authored with Dr. Kathleen O’Rourke is Support Groups for Children published in 1996 by Accelerated Development, a division of Taylor and Francis. Dr. Worzbyt, Dr. O’Rourke, and Dr. Dandeneau are currently drafting a second edition of
Elementary School Counseling: A Blueprint for Today and Tomorrow which was first published in 1989 by Accelerated Development. 

Dr. Worzbyt is currently working with IUP’s Highway Safety Center, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on a predriver education curriculum for upper elementary and middle school children which addresses risk assessment and risk management issues. This program is entitled Caring Children Make Caring Choices. Dr. Worzbyt will leave on sabbatical for the Spring 1998 semester devoting all of his energies to this project.
He has also authored a chapter on STOP, THINK, GO Decision Making: A Winning Signal for Pennsylvania’s Enhanced Driver Education Curriculum, a program for which he continues to consult and offer training. 

Dr. Worzbyt is a nationally certified counselor (NCC), registrant of the National Distinguished Service Registering in Counseling and is listed in Who’s Who in the World, American Education, and in the East. He has received two national writing
awards for publications, the College of Education Faculty Recognition Award for Outstanding Accomplishments as Teacher - Scholar, and was honored by the United States Congressional Medal of Honor Society for having written Beating The Odds, a youth program which they adopted in 1995. Dr. Worzbyt is also the 1997 recipient of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association Eminent Practitioner Award.
