What is a Guidance Counselor?
A counselor is a person who is trained to understand the unique qualities and needs that each student possesses. A counselor's job is to assist you in acheiving school success and reaching your fullest potential. Your counselor is someone with whom you can discuss problems and concerns and request advise on a number of issues both personal and school related.Is everything I discuss with my counselor confidential?First and foremost in counseling is the relationship between you and your counselor. It is essential that this relationship be based on respect and trust. However, if a student discloses information to a counselor that could place that student's or another person's health, welfare or safety at risk, you counselor, by law, must report this information to ensure that you get the help that is needed. Examples of such issues that may arise include:What kinds of things can I discuss with my counselor?-suicide
-threats of violence
-illegal activities (serious)
-physical and/or sexual abuse
-pregnancy
-drug and alcohol abuse
-other undefined situations as deemed necessaryYou can discuss almost anything that you may need to with your counselor, within reason. Issues that your counselor has experience in addressing, include, but are not limited to:How do I make arrangements to see my counselor?-career indecision
-post graduation planning
-academic difficulties
-teen pregnancy and parenting
-juvenile delinquency
-chemical dependency issues
-physical, emotional and sexual abuse
-mental health concerns (depression, suicide, eating disorders, etc)
-relationships (parent, peer and dating)
-stress/anxiety
-crisis interventionJust come in! You will be asked to fill out a "Blue Slip" or "Request to Meet with a Counselor" that asks for your name, grade level, free periods (or best times to call for you) and a brief description of the issue you want to discuss. Your counselor will then send for you when he/she is available and ready to address your concern. Please remember, you will be asked to see your Hall Pass by the guidance secretary if classes are in session, so be sure you receive one from your teacher. You can always stop in to fill out a "Blue Slip" before or after school.Can my parents speak to, or meet with my counselor about me?In case of an emergency, come in right away. A counselor is always available to help in crisis situations.
Yes! The guidance counselors can offer support, resources, and information to your parents to help you have a successful school year, and beyond. They are also available and willing to meet with your parents to discuss issues as they relate to you by simply scheduling a conference through the guidance department secretary.What services are offered by the Guidance Department?to find out!
