Doctoral Internship Planning and Implementation Guidelines for the Neuropsychology and Learning Disorders Specialty Track

1. Identify a site in the student's area of residence that will offer the opportunity to work with children and adolescents. The site should generally consist of a hospital, rehabilitation, or similar facility. It should not consist of a private practice setting.

2. Identify an on-site supervisor(s) that has the appropriate training in neuropsychology. The supervisor of record must have doctoral level training with specialization in neuropsychology. To that end, it can be a school or clinical psychologist. It should not be a physician or psychiatrist. Field supervisors must provide a vitae for faculty review and approval.

3. The student must submit a written internship plan prior to beginning the experience. The faculty supervisor must approve this plan before you can proceed with any aspect of your internship. This plan should include:

A) a site description (brochures, etc.),

B) names, titles, addresses and phone numbers of all supervisors,

C) a description of the anticipated internship activities including the types of cases to be seen, testing, consultation, in-service, etc.,

D) how the above activities will be evaluated by the site-supervisor.

E) please send your proposal via email. Once approved, please send a hard copy

Please note that the site-supervisor should provide at least 2 hours of direct supervision for every 40 hours of internship experience.

4. IUP has a formal written agreement between the university and the internship site. This agreement has to be signed by a signing authority for the internship site and approved by IUP. In addition, the faculty supervisor will be corresponding by email to the site supervisor regarding expectations of the internship experience. Please keep in mind that both of these items need to be completed before you can start.

5.The student should keep a log of their activities (see samples). Please record the amount of time spent in each different category of internship experience. For example, separate the log into categories such as: testing, consultation, report writing, therapy, direct supervision, test preparation, in-service, etc.; and record the amount of time spent in each activity. Please type your log and submit to the faculty supervisor after each 100 hours of experience along with sample reports that illustrate the kinds of cases you are seeing. A minimum of 300 clock hours is required for the internship experience.

6. The student will also be required to submit sample reports for each 100 hour of internship experiences. These samples should reflect the wide range of cases you have experienced. These reports can be submitted along with the evaluation form that should be submitted after each 100 hours of experience. More details for these sample reports are also provided in the letter that is sent out to your supervisor.

7.The site supervisor will be asked to complete the internship evaluation form after each 100 hours of experience. Please provide your site supervisor with a copy of the evaluation form. Please ensure that both you and your supervisor(s) sign the evaluation form before it is sent to me. Please make a copy for your records.  In addition, the faculty supervisor will contact the site-supervisor as necessary.

8. It will be your responsibility to ensure that you have your own liability insurance - the internship site may require proof of this

8. At the end of your internship experience, submit all the above items (e.g., logs and sample reports) on a CD – I may post some of them on my Web page.

9. It will be your responsibility to contact me and request a “change of grade” for your internship. Please ensure that all the above items are completed before the grade change is requested.

10. Please keep in mind that you are encouraged to contact me for any concerns or problems that arise.
