Welcome to Dr. Lamberski's Virtual Advisor! You are probably visiting this section of Dr. Lamberski's site because you are thinking of creating or improving your own virtual advisor. To help you along, you will find information about the origin of the Virtual Advisor below.

In the early 90s, several things happened that changed the nature of advising in the Communications Media Department at IUP. The number of undergraduates in the department doubled, resulting in a sharp rise in advisees. Coinciding with this was a branching out of the discipline, a change affected largely by the Internet. Students began to enter the department with a host of diverse goals. Advising became more difficult, and there was no longer time to devote to simple problems.

To lessen this problem personally, Dr. Lamberski created the Virtual Advisor, a self-help tool for Communications Media undergraduates. Students could now refer to an online guide for answers to their more easily solvable problems rather than take up large portions of time with advisors. The Virtual Advisor keeps students accountable for their part in planning their college careers. With printable graduation checklists and procedures, there are no longer any excuses for passivity and ignorance. The information is easy to understand and accessible to anyone.

To understand the benefits of the Virtual Advisor, one need only consider the alternative: the complex advising problems already encountered by Dr. Lamberski (very costly in terms of time spent) plus the nagging, small issues dealt with personally before the advent of the Virtual Advisor.

Most recently, Dr. Lamberski gave a workshop on the development of the Virtual Advisor and the purpose of advising.  His powerpoint is available here.  Click to launch powerpoint presentation.
